Velvetyne Saved My Life : Pre-order the book!

Dear friends,

we are absolutely delighted to announce the release of a bilingual monograph dedicated to our foundry, published by Surfaces Utiles.

Since 2011, we have been committed to creating and distributing typefaces under open-source licenses. Our collective advocates for an uninhibited typographic practice, guided by political principles and aesthetic risk-taking.

In 2020, as Velvetyne reached 10 years of life, we started a monograph project with Sandra Chamaret. Through the –zeug publishing house, she conducted a series of interviews with our members. Olivier Bertrand of Surfaces Utiles then joined the project as a co-publisher to help us bring it to life

Velvetyne Saved My Life (FR/EN) offers a true behind-the-scenes look at our collective. The book features a polyphonic interview, in-depth articles on our typefaces, and a catalogue of over 70 fonts from all over the world. Across 304 pages, it reveals the inner workings of our unconventional foundry and reflects our commitment to free culture, our singular editorial policy, and our pedagogical practices. Halfway between a narrative and a type specimen, this book is both a story to be read and a manifesto to be seen, and celebrate our generous creative process that continually reinvents itself.

Early bird special: 15% off, for the first 150 copies. Pre-ordering is the best way to support this collective adventure! Expected delivery: May 2026 📕

PS. Yes we know, our website is often offline these days. We're being hit by a big wave of crawlers, as many as half a million hits per day. This is hard on our server which just can't handle such numbers. We're sorry for the inconvenience and are working on a way to solve this very annoying issue.
